PROGRAM

Composed in 1781 for his friend Friedrich Ramm, this quartet puts the oboe in the spotlight with sparkling runs, soaring high notes, and playful exchanges with the strings. Its three movements — lively, lyrical, and dance-like — combine elegance with charm, making it a jewel of the oboe’s chamber repertoire.

Written in 1845 and dedicated to the violinist Louis Spohr, Mendelssohn’s second piano trio is more dramatic and turbulent than his first, reflecting the darker hues of late Romantic expression. Its four movements move between stormy passion, lyrical warmth, and moments of spiritual uplift — the finale famously weaves in a chorale theme reminiscent of a Lutheran hymn. Full of virtuosic energy yet deeply heartfelt, it shows Mendelssohn at the height of his powers.

A towering work of the Romantic repertoire, Brahms’s quintet went through several versions before reaching its final form in 1864. Blending piano and strings, it has the grandeur of a symphony yet the intimacy of chamber music. Its four movements traverse dark intensity, tender lyricism, and culminate in a fiery, impassioned finale.
