Everyday WonderS
The girl from aleppo
Join Syrinx vocal women’s ensemble, violinist Annabelle Swainston and pianist Ayesha Gough for a deeply moving journey through the landscapes of human resilience, reflection and peace.
Centred around Cecilia McDowall’s extraordinary five-movement cantata, Everyday Wonders: The Girl from Aleppo, this concert traces the true, perilous trek of refugee Nujeen Mustafa from Syria to Europe.
Balanced by the tender intimacy of Brahms’ Intermezzo in A-major, a capella works of purity and innocence by Loenora D’Este and John Tavener and the atmospheric textures of violinist and composer Annabelle Swainston’s Currawong at Dusk, invite to a more reflective segment in the program.
Profound sacred calls for peace by Gregor Meyer and Arvo Pärt complete this program as an exploration of hope against all odds.

Syrinx are performing concerts regularly since 2019 and have become known as one of the finest choral ensembles in the Northern Rivers.
Annabelle Swainston, Violin

Annabelle is an established violinist, educator, composer and director who is passionate about supporting people to reach their potential.
At the Coffs Harbour Regional Conservatorium, Annabelle has developed a range of ensemble programs supporting students from beginner to advanced levels. Having grown up in both Coffs Harbour and the Sunshine Coast, she is passionate about giving regional young musicians access to the opportunities, encouragement and musical experiences that helped shape their journey. She founded the Junior Academy and directs the Coffs Con String Camp, now in its sixth year, bringing together violin, viola, cello and double bass students aged 8–18 from across the Mid North Coast and regional NSW. She also conducts and directs the Adult Chamber Orchestra and the Academy, an advanced chamber ensemble performing professional string repertoire. Many of her students have gone on to pursue tertiary music studies and professional careers in the arts.
A central part of Annabelle’s work is composing music for her students. She regularly writes engaging ensemble works specifically designed for developing string players, aligning with curriculum goals while fostering musical creativity, confidence and ensemble skills. In 2026, her composition Sweet Angel won a national Australian Strings Association award for Best Piece for Intermediate String Orchestra. Her works are regularly performed in educational programs and schools across Coffs Harbour, Bellingen, Armidale and Brisbane.
In 2025, Annabelle toured Europe with the Regional Youth Orchestra of NSW, representing regional Australian music education on the international stage. Highlights included a sold-out performance in Vienna’s Musikverein Golden Hall as part of the annual Summa Cum Laude International Youth Orchestra Festival. Having experienced the impact of this kind of support herself as a member of the Australian Youth Orchestra’s 2013 international tour, Annabelle is particularly passionate about helping create similar opportunities for the next generation of young musicians.
Annabelle’s creative work is shaped by cross-genre collaborations, drawing inspiration from her work with jazz, contemporary and folk artists, including Monique Clare, The Redeemed, Lily Hallawell, Mitch Burgess and Pablo Blitzer. She performs regularly with the Coffs Harbour String Quartet, which collaborates and records with Russell Crowe through his band, Indoor Garden Party. She has also performed alongside prominent Australian pop artists, including Jessica Mauboy, Billie Eilish and Delta Goodrem.
As a freelance orchestral musician, Annabelle has performed with the Queensland Symphony Orchestra, Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra and Queensland Chamber Orchestra (Camerata). Her solo performances include the Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto in D major with the Queensland Conservatorium Orchestra under conductor Johannes Fritsch, and the Khachaturian Violin Concerto in D minor with the Brisbane Philharmonic Orchestra under conductor Chen Yang. She served as Concertmaster of the Queensland Youth Symphony for three years and has also led the Australian Youth Orchestra National Music Camps and the Queensland Conservatorium Orchestra. Annabelle achieved both her A.Mus.A and L.Mus.A diplomas with distinction at just 12 and 14 years of age, respectively. She studied with Michele Walsh and Alice Waten at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music and Griffith Conservatorium of Music.
